Cedar waxwing — size comparison — facts and sources

The cedar waxwing is closely linked to fruit availability. Flocks visit shrubs and trees with ripening food, moving on once resources are depleted. In the warmer part of the year they supplement their diet with insects, which they may also catch in flight.

It usually remains sociable even during breeding. Pairs build open nests on branches, and breeding timing may be linked to seasonal food abundance. During courtship partners may pass a small object or food to one another, repeating the gesture in both directions.

It occurs in parks, orchards and gardens containing suitable plants. Sightings can be uneven: a place full of birds today may be empty tomorrow.
