The Canada jay inhabits boreal and mountain forests of North America. It particularly favours spruce stands providing shelter and many caching places. It remains active in harsh winter conditions, and a pair usually occupies its area year-round.
It eats invertebrates, fruit, fungi, carrion and small animals. It forms surplus food into sticky portions with saliva, attaching them beneath bark, among needles or lichens. Memory of hiding places allows use of stores later when fresh food is harder to obtain.
It nests in a tree, often choosing a sheltered site benefiting from sunlight. It breeds exceptionally early, still in wintry weather. Partners maintain a lasting bond, and a young bird remaining near the family may help feed the next generation after fledging.
