Bufflehead — size comparison — facts and sources

The bufflehead is a small diving duck from North America. Underwater it searches for invertebrates, adjusting its diet to the type of water body. In its breeding areas it visits lakes surrounded by forest, while in winter it often uses sheltered bays, coasts and larger bodies of water.

It nests in tree cavities, including holes left by woodpeckers. The small chamber provides room for the eggs and protects the brood from some threats. After hatching, the young leave the cavity and follow the female, which leads them to suitable places on the water.
