Broad-winged Hawk — size comparison — facts and sources

The broad-winged hawk breeds in large deciduous and mixed forests of eastern North America. It favours areas near forest clearings and water bodies, usually away from heavily modified landscapes. Most populations winter farther south, in forests from Mexico into South America.

It watches for prey from a branch, often hidden below the canopy. It eats small rodents, frogs, toads, large insects and other small animals. It usually catches prey in a short flight to forest litter and less often hunts in the air.

It nests in a tree fork; the pair may refurbish an old structure of its own or another bird's. It maintains a separate breeding territory. Migration changes its behaviour: thousands may circle together in warm-air thermals, forming spectacular gatherings along the route.
