The boreal owl lives in Northern Hemisphere forests. In North America it inhabits mainly boreal forests and mountain conifer stands, often mixed with aspens. It needs places to hide by day and suitable breeding cavities. Its presence is easier to detect by voice than by sight.
At night it hunts voles, mice, shrews and other small animals. From a low branch it watches and listens for prey, then catches it in a short flight. Exceptionally good hearing helps locate prey in dim light and under vegetation cover.
It does not excavate its own cavity, using woodpecker holes and nest boxes instead. The female incubates, while the male brings food. Outside breeding the birds usually remain apart; rodent availability influences movements and feeding-site selection.
