Blue-and-yellow macaw — size comparison — facts and sources
The blue-and-yellow macaw is a large South American parrot with blue wings and back, yellow underparts and a long tail. Fine lines of dark feathers cross the white cheek skin. It lives in tropical forests, riverine woodland and palm wetlands. Its powerful curved bill cracks tough food and provides an additional support while climbing.
It eats fruit, seeds and nuts. Social groups travel between feeding and roosting areas, maintaining contact through loud calls. Even within a large flock, partners can often be seen flying close together.
Pairs use a large tree cavity for breeding. The young develop inside and are fed by adults. Old trees therefore provide more than food: they also supply nesting chambers that take many years to form.
