Blue jay — size comparison — facts and sources

The blue jay inhabits North American deciduous forests, parks and gardens. It has a prominent crest and blue, black and white wings and tail. Blue colour comes from feather microstructure rather than blue pigment.

It eats seeds, acorns, insects and small vertebrates. It caches food for later use; seeds left behind may germinate. Active and sociable, it uses contact and alarm calls. Some birds migrate, while others remain locally through winter.
