The turquoise-fronted amazon has green plumage, a turquoise forehead and yellow areas on its head. The extent of yellow varies between individuals, and red accents are visible on the wings. It inhabits forests, savannas and wooded areas in South America.
It feeds in pairs or flocks. Its powerful, curved bill allows it to split seeds and process plant food. Birds maintain group contacts even when they form breeding pairs.
It nests in hollows in mature trees. Partners stay close while feeding and resting during the breeding season. Chicks hatch naked and helpless, spending much of their development sheltered in the cavity.
