The blue-eared kingfisher inhabits shaded Asian forest streams, swamps and mangroves. It watches from low branches, often only a metre or two above water, for small fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects.
It makes short dives from perches. Usually solitary and defending a shoreline section, it breeds in a chamber at an earth-bank tunnel’s end.
