The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The black-necked stilt feeds in shallow wetlands of the Americas. It wades slowly, taking small animals from the water and substrate. Long legs allow it to use places not always accessible to shorter birds.
It occurs beside lagoons, ponds and seasonally flooded areas. It nests on the ground, often on a small rise beside water. Soon after hatching, chicks can move and gather food themselves.
However, the parents remain necessary for protection from threats and for guiding the young towards suitable resting and feeding places. Birds can respond together to intruders approaching their broods.
