This gull is closely associated with the sea. It builds nests on narrow cliff ledges, often in large, noisy colonies. It sometimes also nests on structures resembling rocky cliffs. After breeding it disperses over open waters, where it obtains fish and invertebrates.
Young birds have a clear black wing pattern and a dark bill. Adults are much more subdued in colour. Colony success depends on nearby feeding grounds: parents must regularly bring food from the sea to the chicks.
