The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The black-crowned night heron inhabits wetlands on several continents, including in Poland. It feeds chiefly at dusk and at night, although it may also be active by day. From the bank or shallow water it watches for fish, amphibians, crustaceans and other small animals.
When not feeding, it often rests under the cover of trees and shrubs. It nests in colonies, sometimes alongside other waterbirds.
Its use of wetlands depends on local conditions and the season. In some parts of its range the birds migrate, while elsewhere they stay closer to their breeding areas.
