The black-cheeked lovebird has a very restricted southwestern Zambian range, associated with mopane forests and neighbouring woodland. It eats seeds, young leaves, buds and fruit.

It uses nearby water daily. Changes in water and land use may matter to its small population. Calls maintain contact; resting birds preen partners and perch together.
