The black-capped chickadee is an active inhabitant of North American forests and gardens. It searches slender branches, bark and buds, often adopting surprising feeding positions. It eats small invertebrates and seeds and regularly visits feeders near settlements.
Outside the breeding season it forms small flocks, sometimes with other woodland birds. Various calls help maintain contact and warn of danger. It distributes food stores among numerous hiding places to which it can return when food is harder to obtain.
It nests in tree holes and also uses nest boxes. A pair may work to excavate a chamber in soft wood.
