Grey plover — size comparison — facts and sources

The grey plover breeds on Arctic tundra and outside breeding is associated mainly with coasts. Migrating and wintering birds use exposed mudflats, sandy beaches and estuaries. They change feeding places with the tide, resting beyond the reach of high water.

It watches for surface invertebrates, alternating runs with characteristic pauses. It eats worms, crustaceans, molluscs and insects. Terrestrial food matters on breeding grounds, while on sea shores it uses organisms in sediment and shallow water.

The nest lies in a small tundra depression, and both parents help care for the brood. Chicks become mobile shortly after hatching. After breeding birds may gather at shared resting sites, although when feeding they often keep some distance from others.
