Belted Kingfisher — size comparison — facts and sources

The belted kingfisher hunts over rivers, lakes and coasts. It watches the water from a branch or post, sometimes hovering above the surface before diving for prey. It most often catches small fish.

It takes them back to a perch, where it may prepare the food for swallowing. To breed, it needs a suitable bank. The pair excavates a tunnel ending in a chamber that holds the brood.

The nesting site may be some distance from the water's edge if the substrate allows safe excavation. Its loud, rattling call often reveals its presence along a river.
