Bee hummingbird — size comparison — facts and sources

The bee hummingbird is the smallest living bird. It lives in Cuba. A breeding male has a metallic reddish-pink head and throat, a blue-green back and pale underparts.

It visits flowers, taking nectar while hovering. It supplements its food with small animals that provide protein among other nutrients. At close range its rapid flight and tiny outline may resemble the movement of a large insect.

Its nest is a miniature cup of delicate plant material bound with spider silk. The elastic fibres allow it to stretch as the chicks grow. The eggs are approximately the size of coffee beans.
