The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The barred owl lives in mature North American forests, often near streams, wetlands and lakes. It favours larger, less fragmented forest complexes with old trees.
It hunts mainly after dark and at night, although it sometimes also feeds by day. From a perch it watches and listens for rodents, birds, amphibians and invertebrates. It may catch fish and crayfish beside water and temporarily hide surplus prey.
It most often nests in a natural cavity but also uses abandoned nests of other animals and suitable nest boxes. A pair may maintain its bond for many years. The birds remain territorial year-round and respond particularly vigorously to intruders near the nest during breeding.
