Australian king parrot — size comparison — facts and sources

The Australian king parrot inhabits forests of eastern Australia and neighbouring habitats. The male has a red head and underside with green wings. The female’s head remains green. Both have a long tail and a strong bill for cracking seeds.

It feeds in tree crowns and on the ground, eating seeds and fruit. It is usually seen in pairs, and also in small groups outside the breeding season. The birds move between places where food is ripening.

It chooses a deep tree cavity for breeding. The chamber can lie well below the visible entrance, inside the trunk. Adults regularly return from feeding grounds to deliver food to the young.
