The Atlantic puffin is a small North Atlantic seabird with a black back, a white belly and a large colourful bill. Bright bill features are most conspicuous during breeding. It spends most of the year at sea, returning to land to raise young in coastal colonies.
Diving resembles underwater flight: short wings provide propulsion, while webbed feet help steer. It catches small fish and crustaceans and can carry several fish crosswise in the bill at once.
It nests in burrows or cliff crevices. A pair incubates a single egg and regularly feeds the chick in its sheltered chamber. Colonies empty after breeding as adults disperse at sea again.
