Andean cock-of-the-rock — size comparison — facts and sources

The Andean cock-of-the-rock inhabits humid forests on Andean slopes. Males have a bright orange or red front and a large rounded crest that almost conceals the bill. Females are more subdued in colour. Fruit forms most of the diet, supplemented by insects and small vertebrates.

Males regularly gather at display grounds, competing before visiting females with bows, hops and loud calls. Body position and the presentation of the crest help attract attention.

The female builds a mud nest beneath a sheltered rock, often near a stream or damp cliff. She incubates and feeds the young alone. The conspicuous male displays take place away from the concealed nest.
