The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The American golden plover breeds on North American tundra in open areas with low vegetation. During long migrations it uses fields, short grass and exposed shores; many birds winter on South American grasslands.
It finds prey visually, alternating short runs with pauses and quick pecks. It eats insects, their larvae and other invertebrates, as well as some fruit and seeds. Food type changes with feeding location and season.
The nest is a shallow ground depression lined with a little vegetation. Both parents incubate, and the mobile chicks soon leave the hatching site. After breeding the birds travel in flocks.
