The Billy is a large French scent hound with long legs and a short, pale coat. It may be white or cream, sometimes with light orange markings. It has drooping ears, a long neck and a deep chest. Its body is strong while retaining the lightness needed for sustained running.
Gaston Hublot du Rivault developed the breed in the nineteenth century by combining old French hounds. Its name comes from his estate, Château de Billy, in Poitou. He sought a capable pack dog, particularly for hunting large game. The Billy remains associated with the French hunting tradition, in which scenting ability, endurance and maintaining the whole group's pace were all important.
While searching it is energetic, determined and deeply focused on scents. It readily covers considerable distances and can work for a long time without losing interest. It uses its voice, allowing its activity to be followed out of sight as well. With people it retains initiative; after finding an interesting trail it more often develops the search independently than waits for guidance on the next step.
