The Bernese Mountain Dog is large and strong, with a long black coat, rust-coloured points and white markings. A white blaze on the muzzle, a pale chest and brown spots above the eyes make it recognisable. It has a broad head, drop ears and a bushy tail. Despite its substantial build, it moves freely with a long, springy stride.
It comes from the Bern region of Switzerland, where it guarded farms, helped move cattle and pulled small carts of goods. It was originally called the Dürrbächler after the locality and inn of Dürrbach, where such dogs were especially common. Breeders around Burgdorf founded a breed club in 1907 and began organising breeding.
With familiar people, it is generally affectionate and gentle. It enjoys family company and shared activities. Often calm in everyday situations, it remains watchful and notices strangers. Its moderate temperament allows enthusiastic play followed by quiet rest near the family.
