The Bernedoodle is a Bernese Mountain Dog–Poodle cross. It may have a strong body, abundant wavy or curly hair and tricolour markings, but not every individual resembles a curly Bernese. Colour, head shape and size vary, partly with the size of Poodle used.
Its ancestry combines a Swiss farm dog with a breed descended from water retrievers. Modern Bernedoodle breeding developed for companionship. The name covers direct crosses and subsequent generations; these dogs are not a Bernese variety bred to that breed’s standard.
Many readily approach people and enjoy play. They may be attentive to their owners but vary in excitability, independence and activity needs. The calmer behaviour associated with Bernese dogs need not dominate Poodle activity. Temperament follows more complex inheritance than simply combining each breed’s most popular traits.
