The Beauceron is a large, athletic sheepdog with a short coat and a strong, elongated head. Black dogs with reddish-brown tan markings are best known, although harlequin colouring also occurs. Double dewclaws on the hind legs are a distinctive feature. Its outline is strong and muscular while retaining the freedom of movement needed for long hours of work.
It developed in France as a helper in moving and protecting flocks. By the late nineteenth century the names Beauceron, Chien de Beauce and Bas-Rouge, meaning 'red stockings' and referring to the tan legs, had become established. Organised breeding separated short-haired dogs of this type from long-haired Briards. The value of earlier Beaucerons depended chiefly on their usefulness in everyday livestock work.
It is attentive, confident and strongly engaged in activities undertaken with people. It quickly notices movement and changes around it and can remain reserved with strangers. It often shows attachment to those close to it through constant companionship and readiness for shared action. An engaging task can hold its focused effort for a long time.
