The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Bearded Collie is a shaggy sheepdog with an elongated body, light stride and distinctive beard. Long hair covers its head and body but should not restrict freedom of movement. It is strong and moves with a springy stride. Drooping ears, abundant eyebrows and a soft expression give it a gentle appearance, particularly evident during lively play.
It descends from Scottish herding dogs that helped direct flocks and move livestock between pastures. Work in varied terrain required endurance, initiative and responses to a handler moving away. 'Bearded' refers to its facial hair. Modern breeding established the appearance of the old shaggy sheepdog, and the breed also entered homes and show rings.
The Beardie is generally cheerful, lively and open to contact. It clearly expresses emotion through movement, bouncing and eager involvement in people's activities. It quickly spots moving objects and enjoys tasks requiring reactions. It learns quickly and can seek solutions independently. Its curiosity often leads it to invent games and ways of attracting attention.
