The Beagle is a small, sturdy scent hound with a broad muzzle and long, round-ended ears. It has a short, dense coat and a high-carried tail, usually tipped with white. Its compact body is athletic and enduring. When scenting, it often lowers its head while the active tail remains visible above vegetation.
Beagles were bred in Britain to hunt hares in packs followed on foot. A good nose, persistence and cooperation with other dogs were valued. Earlier types differed in size and coat before organised breeding established the modern appearance. Tracking and giving voice on a trail remain central to the breed’s working tradition.
Usually cheerful and social, a Beagle readily joins in play. An interesting scent can quickly become more important than a handler’s suggestion. It may choose its own search direction and persist for a long time. It often enjoys both people and canine company and expresses excitement with a loud voice.
