Beagle-Harrier — size comparison — facts and sources

The Beagle-Harrier is a medium-sized scent hound, larger than a Beagle and smaller than a Harrier. It has short hair, drooping ears and a strong, proportionate body. Longer legs and a free stride give it an athletic appearance. It is a distinct breed: the name does not mean any offspring of a single Beagle–Harrier mating.

The breed developed in France, drawing on the traditions of both British hounds. Breeding aimed to establish a dog suited to hunting, particularly in packs. Scenting ability, endurance and maintaining a shared pace were important.

It is energetic and sociable, especially with familiar dogs. It readily explores with its nose and may follow an interesting scent for a long time. Hunting excitement brings out independence, while its voice helps communication over distance. Interest in a trail can outweigh the wish to stay constantly close to a person.
