The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a low, powerful dog with harsh red hair. It has drop ears, an elongated body and short, strong legs. Its coat looks natural and rough without a long beard obscuring the muzzle. It moves energetically and freely, with an expressive gaze reflecting interest in its surroundings.
It originates in Brittany and descends from the larger Griffon Fauve de Bretagne. Smaller dogs able to follow game efficiently through dense, difficult terrain were established. By the nineteenth century it was popular regionally, gaining wider French recognition in the late twentieth century. Rabbit-hunting work was especially valued, aided by small size and persistence.
It is generally cheerful, sociable and affectionate with familiar people. In new places it readily sniffs and quickly focuses on a discovered trail. It may repeatedly return to one problem, seeking the scent's continuation. Persistent curiosity combines with boldness in scrub and uneven terrain. At home it can be more relaxed, enjoying household company.
