The Basset Bleu de Gascogne has short legs, an elongated body and very long ears. Its short coat is densely mottled black on white, appearing bluish from a distance. Larger dark patches and tan head markings complete the distinctive colouring. Despite its low outline it remains a capable, fairly agile hound.
It belongs to the family of Gascon hounds from southwestern France. It was bred to track small game, particularly rabbits and hares, working alone or in groups. Restoration of its population began in the late nineteenth century, preserving regional appearance and working abilities. Its low height allowed hunters to follow on foot while it searched the ground thoroughly.
It is usually cheerful, affectionate and happy in the company of people and other dogs. Outdoors it becomes deeply interested in scents and pursues its chosen activity persistently. Its deep, carrying voice is one of its most recognisable features. It can combine affection at home with independence on outings, especially when it finds a trail in grass or thickets worth investigating further.
