The Barbet is a French water dog with a powerful body and an abundant curly coat. Longer head hair forms eyebrows and the beard that gives the breed its name. It has a broad muzzle, hanging ears and strong legs. A natural, somewhat tousled coat helps protect it when working in cold water and wet vegetation.
Dogs called barbets appear in French sources from the sixteenth century. They helped hunters find and retrieve waterfowl in wetlands and along shores. Their history overlaps with other European water dogs, including the Poodle. Later breeding established modern breeds while preserving the Barbet’s strong build, distinctive coat and working ability in water.
Barbets are usually sociable, cheerful and closely attached to their handlers. They readily join activities and explore new places. Many enter water enthusiastically even in cool weather. They can search persistently while responding attentively to people. At home they often seek closeness and involvement in family routines.
