The Barbado da Terceira is a strong, medium-sized dog with long, wavy hair. A beard, moustache and full eyebrows give it a shaggy appearance. Abundant hair also covers part of the muzzle and ears. Its body is capable, with fast, agile movement.
It comes from Terceira in Portugal’s Azores. Local people used it to move cattle and guard farms, valuing determination and quick reactions when working with large animals. Island isolation and selection for work helped preserve the local type. The Portuguese Kennel Club maintains its own national standard for it.
It is lively, quick to learn and strongly bonded to its handler. It watches movement attentively, readily joins activities and can adjust its responses as situations change. Independence is especially apparent in tasks requiring quick decisions. With familiar people it can be close and sociable, while unfamiliar sounds or movement quickly attract its attention.
