Austrian Pinscher — size comparison — facts and sources

The Austrian Pinscher is medium-sized, stocky and more sturdily built than the elegant German Pinscher. It has a short coat with dense undercoat and a lively, attentive expression. White markings often appear on the chest, muzzle or feet. It resembles a capable rural dog: solid, active and without excessively elongated or delicate body parts.

It descends from old Austrian farm dogs. Their duties included guarding premises and controlling rodents, so several abilities were expected of one animal. Systematic breeding began in 1921. Initially called the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher, its name was shortened to the present form in 2000. Preserving a local type mattered as popular foreign breeds increasingly replaced traditional farm dogs.

The Austrian Pinscher is usually lively and deeply interested in household activities. It quickly notices unfamiliar people or sounds and can announce them loudly. With its family it can be affectionate and playful; at first meetings it may be reserved. It has initiative and enjoys investigating corners, especially on detecting a small animal.
