The Austrian Black and Tan Hound, or Brandlbracke, is a capable, medium-sized dog with short, glossy hair. Red tan markings contrast sharply with black, especially on the muzzle, legs and above the eyes. It has drooping ears, a strong body and a build suited to long walks and runs over uneven ground.
It descends from local Austrian hounds. Its development involved hunting in both mountains and lowlands, so versatility mattered more than specialisation in one terrain. It helped hunt hares and locate wounded game after a shot. Its earliest breeding history cannot be reconstructed as confidently as its later working roles.
The Brandlbracke is enduring, attentive and keen to use its nose. On finding an interesting trail it can follow determinedly, voicing its progress. Outside hunting excitement it is described as pleasant and gentle.
