The Australian Terrier is a small, short-legged dog with an elongated body and harsh coat. Erect ears, fuller neck hair and a soft topknot distinguish it. Its rough coat gives a somewhat tousled appearance, but its build remains light and capable. Dark eyes and an uplifted head emphasise interest in everything nearby.
The breed developed from small terriers brought to Australia by settlers. These dogs helped on farms, reduced rodent numbers, raised alarms and accompanied everyday human activities. They were selected in conditions valuing resilience and usefulness in varied work. This diverse population gradually established a small, rough-haired dog with a distinctive head and watchful disposition.
It is courageous, active and closely attached to household members. It enjoys new places, quickly responds to rustling and can firmly announce strangers. Among familiar people it usually shows considerable affection and willingness to play. Terrier independence combines with interest in people, so it may seek shared activities while also exploring independently in the garden or on walks.
