The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Australian Kelpie is a lightly built, athletic sheepdog with erect ears and a short, dense coat. It has strong legs, a slightly elongated body and an attentive expression. Colours include black, red and tan markings. In movement, its most distinctive quality is agility combined with considerable endurance.
The breed developed alongside sheep farming across the vast expanses of New South Wales and Victoria. Its foundation was herding dogs imported from Scotland. Farmers needed helpers capable of moving large flocks through heat and dust over long distances. Selection reinforced physical ability, resilience in harsh conditions and independent problem-solving in the field.
The Kelpie is very active and exceptionally alert to movement. It readily responds to its handler's signals but can also anticipate where it needs to be. It learns new tasks quickly and often remains absorbed in them for a long time. It is usually devoted to its people and willing to cooperate. Activities that combine watching, moving and making decisions engage it most.
