The Australian Cattle Dog has a compact, powerful outline, upright ears and a short, dense coat. Colouring is blue or red speckled, sometimes with distinct head patches. Strong legs, a broad body and an alert gaze give it a purposeful appearance. Agile, it can change direction very quickly.
The breed developed alongside Australian cattle farming. Extensive, often unfenced land required dogs capable of driving semi-wild cattle and enduring harsh conditions for long periods. Imported herding dogs and dingoes contributed, although details of the earliest matings vary between accounts. Breeders chiefly valued courage, endurance and effectiveness with cattle.
Cattle Dogs usually form strong attachments to their handlers and closely follow their behaviour. Focused and persistent, they enjoy tasks requiring both physical effort and thought. Strangers are often treated with reserve, while moving animals or people may prompt attempts to control the situation. They can act independently and decisively, especially when recognising a familiar pattern or objective.
