The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Australian Shepherd has a strong, agile body and a medium-length coat that is straight or slightly wavy, with longer hair on the neck, hind legs and underside. Colours include black, red and merle, often with white and tan. Eye colour also varies. Its free, nimble movement allows quick changes of pace and direction.
Despite its name, the breed developed in the United States. The Australian association is linked to Basque shepherds arriving via Australia with sheep and dogs. American ranchers valued versatile helpers able to work different livestock. After the Second World War, rodeos, horse shows, films and television helped increase its popularity.
Attentive and quick to learn, it enjoys working with people. It notices movement, anticipates activities and engages in games with a clear task. It may try to control the movement of people or animals. Usually close to its family, it can be more cautious at a first meeting with strangers. Endurance combines with a desire to take an active part in its surroundings.
