The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The vampire squid is a cephalopod with eight arms joined by a web. Despite its name, it does not feed on blood. Two thin, sticky filaments collect marine snow: sinking particles of dead plankton, mucus and other organic remains. The collected food is then transferred between the arms and to the mouth.
It lives in deep open water, including waters very low in oxygen. Quietly collecting food requires little energy. When threatened it can turn its arm web inside out, changing its outline, and also uses bioluminescence in defence. Instead of a typical ink cloud it can release luminous fluid.
