The Armenian Gampr is a large, strong dog with a broad head and dense hair. Appearance remains varied: local lines differ in colour, coat length and heaviness of build. They share the strength and capability needed in mountain terrain.
It descends from livestock guardians of the Armenian Highlands. Shepherds valued their ability to stay with flocks and respond to predators, often without a person immediately nearby. Harsh conditions and selection for work established the local type. Modern organisations seek to preserve this heritage, and Gampr history remains closely tied to traditional pastoralism.
In familiar surroundings it can be composed and economical in its movements. It watches events carefully and independently judges when to respond. It bonds strongly with household members but may observe strangers reservedly for a long time. It does not wait for constant commands; independent decision-making is a central temperament trait.
