Ariégeois — size comparison — facts and sources

The Ariégeois is a relatively lightly built French hound with black-and-white hair, sometimes with small tan head markings. Long hanging ears accompany a slimmer body than many large French hounds. Strong limbs support sustained energetic movement, while the head usually appears gentle and calm.

It comes from Ariège in southern France. Smaller regional hounds called briquets were crossed with larger pack hounds. Possible ancestors include the Bleu de Gascogne and Gascon Saintongeois, without reducing the whole history to one certain mating. The result was a lighter hare-hunting dog suited to local terrain.

Usually cheerful and comfortable with other dogs, it can be approachable and cooperative with people while showing considerable initiative during searches. It readily investigates scents and often announces a discovered trail with a loud voice.
