The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The bentstick pipefish has an extremely long, slender body protected by bony rings. Its head is angled relative to the body and its snout extends into a narrow tube. It occurs in the Indo-Pacific in sheltered coastal waters, among seagrasses and algae and over sandy bottoms.
While feeding it may raise its front body above the substrate and face into the current. It sucks in passing small crustaceans, including amphipods and mysids. Its tail helps maintain position in moving water.
The male cares for the eggs. The female transfers them to a partly enclosed chamber beneath the front part of his tail. Early young live in plankton and have elongated skin projections along their backs.
