The ornate ghost pipefish is a small Indo-Pacific fish with an armoured body, a long snout and broad fins. Numerous projections and deeply incised fin membranes break up its outline. Colours may be red, yellow, white or almost black, with irregular patches and fine markings.
Among reef hiding places it waits for small crustaceans, primarily mysids. It draws them through its long, tubular snout. Camouflage allows it to approach small prey without a rapid pursuit.
The female is larger than the male and has particularly enlarged pelvic fins. These form a brood chamber in which she carries developing eggs. Embryos remain in coverings attached to specialised skin cells of the mother.
