Ghost pipefish — size comparison — facts and sources

The robust ghost pipefish lives in coastal Indo-Pacific waters among seagrasses and reef structures. Its elongated snout and broad fins make its outline resemble a piece of vegetation. Its colour is highly variable: greenish individuals occur in seagrass meadows, while brown, reddish and almost black ones also occur around deeper reefs.

It ambushes small crustaceans. It sucks prey through its tubular snout while remaining well concealed in its surroundings. Females are larger and bulkier than males. Their enlarged pelvic fins join to form a chamber in which the eggs develop.
