The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Siamese fighting fish comes from shallow, vegetated waters in South-East Asia. Wild fish generally have brownish bodies with iridescent scales and shorter fins than many aquarium strains. Vivid blue, red and multicoloured fish with flowing tails are products of selective breeding.
In the wild it eats small invertebrates and zooplankton, including insect larvae. It can live in slow-moving water where oxygen levels fall periodically. In addition to gills, it uses a labyrinth organ to take oxygen from air gulped at the surface.
The male builds a bubble nest near the surface, often beneath vegetation. After spawning, he places eggs in the nest and guards them. Fin displays and threats towards other males help defend the breeding site.
