The shortfin molly has a somewhat stocky body, a small upturned mouth and a relatively short dorsal fin. Black mollies are bred varieties; fish sold under that name may also be hybrids or other species.

Poecilia sphenops inhabits fresh waters and some brackish habitats in Mexico and Central America. It eats invertebrates, algae and other plant material. A short dorsal fin distinguishes its typical outline from sailfin mollies.

The male fertilises the female using a gonopodium. Offspring develop inside her body, and newborn young immediately swim and seek food independently.
