Red-bellied piranha — size comparison — facts and sources

The red-bellied piranha has a tall, silver-grey body with red underparts and powerful jaws bearing sharp teeth. It inhabits South American rivers and flood waters, including the Amazon, Paraguay and Paraná basins.

It eats fish, insects, other invertebrates and plant material. Teeth cut off pieces of food. Fish may form groups that also provide protection from predators; gathering does not imply continual hunting in an organised pack.

During breeding, eggs are deposited in sheltered places near plants or roots. Adults may defend the developing eggs. Behaviour depends on context: fish guarding offspring react differently from a group resting among riverside vegetation.

Długość standardowa (SL): od końca pyska do nasady płetwy ogonowej. Przykład, nie średnia populacji. Widok przedni ma przybliżone proporcje.
