The ram cichlid is a small fish of lowlands in the Orinoco basin in Venezuela and Colombia. A dark band crosses the eye, with a clear flank spot and shimmering blue dots. Many females develop pinkish bellies. Gold and bright-blue domestic forms differ from wild colouring.
It feeds near the bottom, taking small mouthfuls of substrate and separating tiny food items. Remaining material leaves through the mouth and gill openings. It also takes particles from submerged surfaces.
A pair lays eggs on a cleaned surface and defends the immediate area. Both parents may tend eggs and young. Hatchlings initially stay near the bottom, later swimming freely under adult protection.
Długość standardowa (SL): od końca pyska do nasady płetwy ogonowej. Przykład, nie średnia populacji. Widok przedni ma przybliżone proporcje.
