The purple tang has a violet-blue body and yellow tail. Tall dorsal and anal fins give the laterally compressed body an oval outline.

It occurs in the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and around the Maldives. It chiefly gathers filamentous algae from overgrown rocks and reef substrate. Several fish may feed together over the same reef area, nibbling successive algal patches.
